The reminder and action is certainly important and rooted in a not-so-great historical context, but in modern public speech (it's not only politicians who do it), it feels to me that it's become an insincere rhetorical throw-away. "You can't argue with me if what I'm saying is about 'the troops.'" What's worse is that something that should be empowering (keeping "the troops" top of mind) seems to me to actually serve to marginalize them. All servicemen and -women are viewed as a group we must ourselves "protect", and their individual views and needs are discounted because we somehow already know what they need (our support, etc.). Senator Clinton (and others who use the same rhetorical tools, even head nods) then one-ups this argument by not only supporting the troops, but also extra-special supporting and caring for the disabled troops.bkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14489709659182235600noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-216856032555627683.post-38933190579837440162008-02-29T08:17:00.000-07:002008-02-29T08:17:00.000-07:00nice catch on the disparaging without even realizi...nice catch on the disparaging without even realizing how disparaging it really is. i'm sure there are a ton of other examples here of common "jokes" or simple expressions with pretty awful genesis. your thesis here--that self-deprecating "humor" encourages the "dominant culture to not know the difference"--is similar to the often-heard "dominant culture" argument that it's ok to use disparaging labels (e.g., the "n" word) even jokingly because those being labeled do it themselves. my own view is the "dominant culture" should know better.

Side note: Mitchell (like every other politician I've heard) offends everyone here with the maddening "campaign game" comment. I was too shy and too ignorant to comment last night but someone pointed out the inconsistency of his inactive care for his daughter compared to his views of family from a political perspective (does that sound like a thought about a person?). And that someone looked nineteen and without children of his own (I do not know this of course. My intuition comes from having no children but aside from a pregnant woman is it possible to tell if someone has children just by looking at them?). Maybe this is just a rant about the inadequacy of discussion to produce insight or the discussion that occured last night related to the topic or the adequacy of it to reveal our own failures in understanding each other and ourselves especially when we separate one from another as though there is Jack Kerouac and everybody else or me and everybody else (even though I am goddamn sure of it -- about me). Yes, I guess this is just a rant. But I enjoyed your presentation and your reading. Not as a judge of course and not out of flattery am I commenting and blah blah blah. Just for me and where I am to hear people talk about something and really believe it matters it sent me off talking to myself wordlessly, a murmur within my head that I had mistaken for the world, a dim moment that is describable afterward, an ence of experience, unrecognizable to people beyond.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13298083883198561807noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-216856032555627683.post-28359995248763404602007-08-21T19:38:00.000-06:002007-08-21T19:38:00.000-06:00Thank you so much for your comment.
